Namaste, dear listeners, and welcome back to Sattvayan — a space where we explore the timeless wisdom of Yoga through the sacred Yoga Sutras of Maharishi Patanjali.
In our last episode, we began our journey with Sutra 1.1:
"Atha Yoganushasanam" — Now, the discipline of Yoga begins.
🌱 So, with that spirit of dedication, today we move forward to Sutra 1.2, the very heart of the Yoga Sutras.
It answers a profound question:
What does Yoga truly mean?
Let’s unfold this together.
🧠 For Understanding the Heart of Yoga
We don’t need to chant fluently.
We don’t need to twist into a perfect pose to grasp this.
All we need is curiosity...
and a simple willingness to pause... and look within.
Whether we’re just beginning and wondering:
“Why is my mind always so restless?”
or we’ve been practicing for years —
this sutra is speaking directly to us.
🕉 Yogah Chitta Vritti Nirodhah - योगश्चित्तवृत्तिनिरोधः ॥१.२॥
"Yoga is the cessation of the fluctuations of the mind-stuff."
Such a simple line, and yet it holds a vast ocean of wisdom.
🧘♀️ Then, Looking Yoga Beyond the Mat
When we look through Maharishi Patanjali’s eyes,
Yoga is not simply the union of the jivatma (individual soul) with the paramatma (supreme soul), as often thought.
Instead, it is the realization of our purest consciousness —
the experience of Samadhi — the ultimate liberation.
Liberation from the endless drama of Prakriti —
where the restless vrittis constantly pull the chitta outward, into the world of materiality.
Thus, true Yoga begins when we realize:
This chitta — this inner field of thoughts and emotions — is only a reflection of Purusha.
It is not Purusha itself.
When our chitta is crowded with endless thoughts,
it becomes entangled with Prakriti —
the ever-changing material world —
pushing us into new cycles of karma —
good, bad, or somewhere in between.
And as we walk deeper into this journey,
we begin to experience the true essence of Yoga —
the stillness Maharishi Patanjali so beautifully portrayed.
He defines Yoga not as movement,
but as stillness —
not just of the body,
but most importantly, of the mind.
🌿 Yoga as a Way of Living
So, Yoga is not limited to downward dogs or headstands.
It is the art of stilling the waves of thought.
True Yoga happens off the mat —
24 hours a day,
7 days a week,
365 days a year.
In our conversations,
our responses,
our awareness —
throughout our day.
🌼 And Now, Exploring Chitta – The Inner Field of Consciousness
The Chitta is the subtle field where all our thoughts, emotions, memories, ego, and intelligence arise.
We can think of it as the canvas of our inner world.
It’s composed of:
🧠 Manas — the reactive mind
💡 Buddhi — the discriminating intelligence
🧍♀️ Ahamkara — the sense of "I" or ego
Along with:
The five senses (jñānendriyas)
The five organs of action (karmendriyas)
The five pranas — vital life energies
Together, they shape our experience of life — our personality.
✨ But always remember:
Chitta is an instrument. It is not our true Self.
The Seer — the Purusha —
pure, unchanging consciousness —
watches it all.
Meanwhile, Chitta is constantly shaped by the three gunas:
Sattva — clarity, stillness
Rajas — activity, restlessness
Tamas — inertia, confusion
Thus, mastering the chitta
is the beginning of mastering our life.
🌊 Understanding Vrittis: The Waves of the Mind
Vrittis are the ripples on the surface of the mind —
thoughts, emotions, memories, desires, fears.
💡 Imagine this:
We’re trying to read a beautiful book,
but the TV is blaring and our phone keeps buzzing.
That constant noise... that's vritti.
And Yoga?
It's the art of gently quieting the noise.
🌀 A Gentle Reminder: Nirodhah ≠ Suppression
A crucial point:
Patanjali doesn’t tell us to suppress the mind.
He invites us to still it.
Not through force,
but through gentle awareness.
It’s like calming a restless child —
not by shouting,
but by lovingly holding them close.
📌 Picture This:
📌 Let's understand this with an example:
Have you ever tried to sit still, only to find your mind racing—like a browser with too many tabs open?
Thoughts keep popping up, one after another, pulling your attention in every direction.
That's the mind in motion.
Now, imagine you gently closing each tab, one by one, until your screen is completely clear.
Can you sense the peace in that stillness? How beautiful it feels?
This is exactly what Sage Patanjali is guiding us toward nirodhah, a state of serene clarity, where the mind becomes still and quiet, like a calm lake reflecting the truth within.
🌿 Another Gentle Visualization:
Think of our mind as a still pond.
When it ripples, our reflection is distorted.
But when the pond becomes still,
clarity arises naturally.
In that stillness, we don’t become someone new —
we simply recognize who we truly are.
🌼 Let’s Pause for a Moment Together
Let’s take a breath.
Let’s notice how our mind feels right now.
is it Fast? Slow? Calm? Busy?
Just observe it.
This simple moment of observation —
without judgment — is Yoga.
🌿 Chitta: A Dynamic, Living Field
The mind is naturally very dynamic.
It’s not a fixed thing,
but a field that shifts and flows, shaped by the gunas — Sattva, Rajas, Tamas.
Yoga helps us move from the changing nature of Prakriti
to the unchanging truth of Purusha.
🌿 When the waves settle, what remains?
Stillness.
Peace.
Truth.
That’s Samadhi —
the ultimate goal of Yoga.
🎯 Key Takeaway:
🔥 Yoga as a Technology of Transformation
Everything that we do, everything that we say — every gesture, every word — is essentially an expression of who we are. It comes out of us as a reflection of our current state.
But Yoga is not about polishing that surface.
Yoga is about deep, inner transformation.
It doesn't just make us behave differently —
it helps us become different.
It’s about:
Breaking old patterns
Rebuilding our inner foundations
Living from stillness, not from reaction
We don't act better.
We become better — naturally, effortlessly.
✨Now the Closing Reflection would be
Understanding suffering is easy.
Mastering the mind —
that is the real journey.
Yoga is not limited to the mat.
It is present in every moment we choose stillness over reaction.
🧘♂️ Pause and Reflect with Me
Today, let’s ask ourselves:
Where are our vrittis pulling us?
Can we pause for just one breath before reacting?
One breath...
One conscious choice...
Let’s notice what shifts inside.
🌟 Before We Close:
We might already be wondering —
“How do we recognize our true self?”
The answer, dear listeners, is waiting for us
in the very next sutra.
🪷 In our next episode, we’ll journey into Sutra 1.3 —
where we meet the Seer —
our own, pure, unchanging Self.
🎧 Until then, let’s keep practicing presence.
Let’s keep living our Yoga —
moment to moment.
Stay peaceful.
Stay curious.
Stay inward.
See you in the next episode of Sattvayan ✨.
Thank you for listening.
Namaste, everyone. 🙏😊
